If you are currently running Vista, then the chances are good that windows 7 will run well or in fact run better than vista with the same hardware. Windows 7 handles memory better and consumes lesser system resources when compared to Vista. More over Windows 7 runs smoothly and responds quickly when compared to Vista. Logically Windows & should have followed XP. If you want to check whether your system can be upgraded to Windows 7 then check your system by running Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor
Will I need more RAM?
Yes, you need more RAM. You should also understand what type of system you have, and what is the number of RAM slots and whether your system can handle more RAM. In addition to that you should also understand to which OS you are upgrading to. There are 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS with vista as well as windows 7. While 64 bit OS will permit you to go beyond 4 gb of RAM, whereas a 32 bit OS will let you use only a memory which is less than 4 gb (2 to the power of 32 is the maximum memory that can be used in a 32 bit OS). You can check the number of memory slots by running CPUZ tool

No. Direct upgrade to windows 7 from XP is not possible, so backup all your files and then go for a clean install. Even if you have Vista, it is better to go for a clean install rather than upgrading it.
I like Vista (or XP) do I have to upgrade?
If you are quite happy then don’t upgrade. Even while purchasing a new system, think twice about the purpose of usage. If you need to install a lot of software that are not Windows 7 compatible then there is no point in upgrading.
Which version of Windows 7 should I purchase?
Ideally for all home users Windows 7 Home Premium is the best deal, but if you want more features then go for ultimate or professional. Which one is right for you?
